Editorial standards

Sources

Figures about earthquakes, storms, eruptions and accidents come from official agencies (for example USGS, the National Weather Service, NOAA) or from established news organisations. Every article lists its sources at the end.

Footage and credit

We show clips from social media by embedding the original post, so the person who filmed it keeps the credit and the views. We do not re-upload other people’s footage. Each embed is marked Verified or Unverified.

Breaking news

We only label a story Breaking when it meets a clear threshold, such as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake or an official emergency warning. We never publish casualty figures before officials confirm them.

Use of AI tools

We may use AI tools to help research and draft. A human editor checks every fact against its source and approves every article before it is published.

Corrections

When we get something wrong we fix it and add a dated correction note to the article. See our Corrections page.
